Steenbergs Organic Cayenne Pepper 55g
Steenbergs Organic Cayenne Pepper 55g
Steenbergs Organic Cayenne Pepper is a finely ground chilli powder with a vibrant red colour, pronounced heat and subtly fruity flavour. Made from dried organic chillies, it provides a convenient way to add controlled warmth and depth to a wide variety of savoury recipes.
The cayenne typically measures between 38,000 and 50,000 Scoville Heat Units, placing it above mild chilli powders and paprika in heat intensity. As chillies are an agricultural ingredient, their exact colour, aroma and heat can vary naturally between growing seasons and individual batches.
Unlike some seasoning blends sold as chilli powder, this product contains only ground cayenne pepper. It does not contain added salt, sugar, cumin, garlic or other herbs and spices, allowing the quantity and flavour balance to be adjusted for each recipe.
Cayenne provides direct chilli heat together with a lightly sweet, capsicum-like flavour. It combines readily with spices such as cumin, coriander, turmeric, paprika, ginger, cinnamon and black pepper, making it suitable for recipes from a variety of culinary traditions.
Add a small amount to curries, chillies, stews, soups, casseroles and tomato-based sauces. It can also be used in marinades, barbecue rubs and seasoning blends for meat, fish, tofu, pulses or roasted vegetables.
For Mexican-inspired dishes, add cayenne to chilli con carne, bean dishes, tacos, enchilada sauces or huevos rancheros. It can also be used in Indian-style curries, bhajis and chutneys, or added to African, Middle Eastern and Asian-inspired recipes where a clean chilli heat is required.
A light sprinkle can be used to season eggs, potato salad, sweet potato, roasted cauliflower or corn. Cayenne may also be combined with salt, paprika and garlic to create a simple seasoning for chips, wedges, popcorn or roasted nuts.
Because the spice is finely ground and relatively hot, it should be added gradually. Begin with a small pinch, stir thoroughly and taste the dish before adding more. Adding cayenne early in cooking distributes the heat throughout the recipe, while adding it near the end creates a more immediate chilli character.
Steenbergs Organic Cayenne Pepper may be sourced from India, Spain or Uganda, depending on the available crop and production batch. It is supplied in a compact 55g jar suitable for storing alongside everyday herbs and spices.
